Take Time to Reflect and Recognize Success -
December 1st, 2004

Each year in the late fall we focus upon the planning
process for the next year. This natural cycle of
business provides an opportunity to celebrate current
successes and motivate for more wins in the near
future.

Take time to celebrate successes

This chance to celebrate successes and recognize
accomplishments is lessened by the reality that some
year-end parties feel more like an obligation, staged
and insincere. When you are celebrating success or
recognizing individual contribution key points to
remember are; always be sincere and be positive in
how you communicate and how you make your point.
Present yourself as a referential role model in how you
compliment in public and counsel in private. Extrinsic
motivation is great and, intrinsically, the respect of our
peers is one of the most powerful motivators we can
experience.

Take time for recognition

Given that there is so much competition for our
attention prior to the New Year, recognition events
are much more powerful when conducted in January
where they get much greater attention. Here are some
practical tools you can use to really appreciate and
celebrate the successes for your department, division
or project team:

Wall of Success:

The purpose of this exercise is to take the time to
focus on accomplishments and recognize the
successes by the team. This is best used as part of
the 2005 planning meetings either at the end of 2004
or beginning of 2005.

Process:
  - Use blank flipchart or print off slide #2 in poster
size and put on wall in meeting room
  - Have each person write down 2-3 successes/
accomplishment this year that move the bar of
Transformation - Use 3”x5” post-it notes and
put one success per post-it note
  - Either dedicate some time at the beginning of the
meeting to have everyone share (sets positive
tone for meeting) or do it throughout the meeting

Desired Outcomes:
  - Dedicating time to recognizing the hard work of
colleagues
  - Share and celebrate as a team
  - Carry forward the successes into 2005

Appreciation Roundtable:

The purpose of this exercise is to take time and
provide peer recognition on an individual-to-individual
level. Best as part of a small team meeting where
some foundation has been built; not good if people
don't know each other. Best if people feel like they've
“been through the battle” together and have some
sense of bonding already.

Process:
  - Dedicate some time at the end of the meeting
to have everyone share (sets positive tone for
closing the meeting)
  - Ask an individual to volunteer to start the process
  - Have them choose a person they want to publicly
appreciate for their contribution, have them speak
directly to the other person in the first person -
“I appreciate you for the great job you did on ...”
  - Have the person chosen pick another person
and continue the process until everyone in the
room has been chosen and appreciated

Desired Outcomes:
  - Dedicating time to recognizing the hard work of
colleagues
  - Individual recognition and appreciation of one
team member by another
  - Share and celebrate as a team
  - Carry forward the successes into 2005
